Adelita Grijalva’s Unconventional Start in Congress
Adelita Grijalva, Arizona’s latest addition to Congress, finds herself in an unusual situation. Despite winning the Congressional District 7 election in September, her official duties are on hold as she awaits her swearing-in by House Speaker Mike Johnson.
Taking to social media, Grijalva humorously highlighted her predicament by offering a virtual tour of her yet-to-be-fully functional congressional office. “Check out this super cool printer! I can’t print with it though, because I don’t have a government email,” Grijalva quipped in a video. She also noted the presence of several office desktops, stating, “They have an administrator passcode. … I don’t have that.”
The delay in her swearing-in is tied to a broader political standoff. Speaker Johnson has indicated that the House will not reconvene until a resolution is reached between Democrats and Republicans. The primary contention involves Affordable Care Act credits, with Democrats pushing for their extension to prevent rising health care premiums. Republicans, however, are not prioritizing the issue, contributing to a government shutdown.
