Arizona Democrat Ansari Introduces Bills to Reform ICE Funding, Oversight

Arizona Congresswoman Proposes Legislation to Limit ICE Funding and Enhance Oversight

In a move aimed at reforming immigration enforcement, Democratic Congresswoman Yassamin Ansari from Arizona has put forth a legislative package designed to reduce financial support for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and increase scrutiny of the agency’s detention practices.

The legislative initiative includes three bills, with the first being the Drain ICE Act, which seeks to revoke the $75 billion allocation designated for ICE in a spending bill crafted by the GOP last year. Another bill mandates the Department of Homeland Security to report on health conditions and care standards in detention facilities, as well as to investigate any allegations of detainee mistreatment. The final bill in the package would instruct the Congressional Budget Office to study the long-term economic impacts of current immigration policies. All three proposals have received backing from Adelita Grijalva, another Democrat representing southern Arizona.

Congresswoman Ansari has expressed concerns about the conditions faced by detainees, citing instances of severe neglect and deteriorating health observed during her visits to the Eloy Detention Center. She views this legislative effort as a crucial step toward greater accountability for ICE.
