Chandler City Council Halts AI Data Center Proposal in Price Corridor

The City of Chandler has denied a proposed AI data center project for its Price Road industrial corridor, following a unanimous decision by the City Council. The decision came after extensive public commentary during a session held on Thursday.

The data center proposal had previously attracted attention due to the involvement of former U.S. Senator Kyrsten Sinema. Sinema had actively participated in city meetings, advocating for the project as part of a broader AI initiative linked to the Trump administration.

Chandler Mayor Kevin Hartke explained the city’s decision, emphasizing a preference for different types of developments in the business district, which currently hosts major companies like Intel and Wells Fargo.

“Big, almost-jobless buildings that are important and desired in other locations don’t fit what we’ve been designing and crafting and looking for in Price Corridor,” stated Mayor Hartke. His remarks highlight the city’s commitment to a strategic vision for the area.

The city reported receiving over 250 emails opposing the data center, with only 10 emails expressing support for the initiative.

The future plans for the 40-acre site owned by New York-based developer Active Infrastructure remain uncertain following the council’s decision.
