Arizona Lawmaker Appeals to Halt Closure of Tucson Medical Facility
In a move to protect access to healthcare for Southern Arizona’s tribal communities, Congressman Juan Ciscomani is urging a reconsideration of plans to close a key federal medical facility in Tucson. The facility, overseen by the Indian Health Service (IHS), currently serves a significant population, including members of the Pascua Yaqui and Tohono O’odham Nation, totaling over 28,000 individuals.
The planned shutdown is part of a larger reorganization by the U.S. Health and Human Services, which aims to consolidate operations with the Phoenix office. However, this decision has faced opposition from both Republican and Democratic lawmakers in Arizona, who argue that it will increase travel burdens for patients seeking medical care.
In an August 10 letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr., Ciscomani highlighted the potential hardships this closure would impose, advocating for maintaining the Tucson office’s services.
The opposition to the closure has been building since June when the realignment plan was first announced. Arizona’s Democratic legislators have also been vocal in their support for keeping the facility open. According to a report by KJZZ, the closure would force patients to travel greater distances for healthcare.
Meanwhile, the broader context of tribal cooperation in Arizona is highlighted by a recent memorandum of understanding (MOU), which presents a cooperative framework among the Navajo Nation, Hopi Tribe, and the state of Arizona. These entities are addressing vulnerabilities related to future closures of coal mines and power stations.
Additionally, despite the potential facility closure, the Tohono O’odham Gaming Enterprise has clarified that there will be no travel restrictions for non-members, including employees, residents, and vendors, as reported by KJZZ.
The ongoing developments come amidst other significant actions by the Trump administration, including the allocation of substantial funds for the construction of a “Smart Wall” in Arizona, as part of its broader border security strategy.
