Former UCLA Gynecologist James Heaps Pleads Guilty to Sexual Abuse

In a surprising turn of events, a former UCLA gynecologist at the center of a widespread sexual misconduct scandal has admitted guilt. James Heaps, whose actions led to UCLA paying $700 million in settlements, now faces an 11-year prison sentence following his plea to sexual abuse charges.

Unexpected Guilty Plea

James Heaps, 69, made an unexpected guilty plea to 13 felony counts, including six counts of sexually abusing an unconscious person. This development comes after an appeals court had previously overturned his conviction due to a trial error regarding juror communication. His lawyer had previously suggested he would be exonerated, adding to the surprise of this plea.

Victim Nicole Gumpert expressed her relief, stating, “I didn’t know that this day would come… We refuse to be silent.” Her words reflect the sentiments of numerous women involved in this case, as reported during a news conference.

Heaps’ legal representative, Leonard Levine, has not yet commented on the plea. Earlier in the year, Heaps’ conviction had been overturned because the jury’s foreman did not communicate a juror’s language proficiency concerns to his attorneys. This resulted in a temporary reprieve for Heaps as detailed here.

Legal Repercussions and Public Reaction

During sentencing, Gumpert addressed Heaps, saying, “Now you have finally admitted what you have done, and while your sentence falls short of the justice truly demands, your ultimate prison will endure in perpetuity, a depraved legacy stripped of respect, honor, and integrity filled instead with shame,” according to the Los Angeles Times.

Appearing unemotional in court, Heaps was sentenced in an orange jail uniform. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman called the guilty plea a critical step in the lengthy judicial process, acknowledging the damage Heaps caused. Hochman remarked, “While no sentence can undo the incredible harm that James Heaps engaged in … hopefully these admissions of guilt and the sentence he received today are a small measure of justice for all that the survivors had to endure.”

Broader Impact and Future Implications

The case against Heaps, who was once among UCLA’s highest-paid medical staff, included charges of sexual battery by fraud and sexual exploitation. These charges spanned the sexual assaults of seven women from 2009 to 2018. UCLA’s response to these events resulted in $700 million in settlements, marking it as one of the most significant payouts by a public university amid similar scandals.

Survivors accused Heaps of groping, inappropriate comments, and unnecessary medical examinations. The guilty plea includes six counts of sexual penetration of an unconscious person, five counts of sexual battery by fraud, and two counts of sexual exploitation of a patient.

John Manly, representing over 200 of Heaps’ former patients, declared that the plea and sentence emphasize that there are “severe consequences for any violation of patients’ rights and dignity.”
