Gov. Katie Hobbs Denies Wrongdoing Amid Foster Home Investigation

Arizona Governor’s Alleged ‘Sweetheart Deal’ Under Investigation

In a cloud of controversy, Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs faces scrutiny over allegations linked to preferential treatment given to a foster care group home. The state’s Attorney General, Kris Mayes, has requested an interview with Hobbs as part of an ongoing investigation, but the governor remains non-committal.

The investigation, initially reported by the Arizona Republic, aims to uncover whether Hobbs was involved in a decision that benefited Sunshine Residential Homes, a company known for its substantial donations to Hobbs and the Arizona Democratic Party in recent years.

Governor Hobbs has consistently denied any involvement, asserting, “I’m looking forward to the conclusion of this investigation which I know will show what reporting has confirmed that I was not involved in the decision and that DCS acted in the best interest of Arizona’s foster children.”

In 2023, a director appointed by Hobbs approved significantly increased payments to Sunshine Residential Homes for their services, which has raised questions about the nature of the relationship between the company and the governor’s office.

Meanwhile, Republican Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell has launched a parallel investigation, and legislative Republicans have also engaged a law firm to probe the matter further. Details of these investigations can be found through a link to Mitchell’s investigation and another to the legislative investigation.

In response to the controversy, Hobbs has expressed her intention to back legislation that would mandate the disclosure of political contributions by companies seeking state contracts. This move comes despite her recent veto of a bill by Sen. T.J. Shope (R-Coolidge) that sought similar transparency, as noted in another source.
