Iranian Returns Home Amid Controversy Over French Detainees’ Release

An Iranian individual, previously convicted in France for promoting terrorism, returned to Iran this Wednesday. This move follows the return of two French nationals, Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris, who had been detained in Iran. The swap has been a topic of significant discussion, although French officials deny any formal exchange agreement.

In February, Mahdieh Esfandiari received a sentence from a Paris court to serve one year in prison, along with a three-year suspended sentence. Her conviction stemmed from remarks she made regarding the events of October 7, 2023, when Hamas led attacks on Israel. Esfandiari has since appealed the verdict, labeling it as “unjust” and claiming, “I had done nothing other than stating the truth,” during an appearance on Iranian television.

Release and Return

Initially placed under house arrest, Esfandiari’s restrictions were lifted shortly after the departure of Kohler and Paris from Iran. Her lawyer, Nabil Boudi, confirmed this update. The two French nationals had been imprisoned in Tehran’s Evin prison for over three years on charges of espionage, which France disputes as baseless.

Kohler and Paris, described their time in Evin as “hell,” with Kohler recounting, “We experienced daily horror.” Their ordeal began in May 2022, when they were arrested while on vacation in Iran. Despite their release in November, they had remained within French diplomatic premises until they were permitted to leave the country.

Diplomatic Tensions

Esfandiari suggested a connection between her release and the return of the French detainees, stating, “On the very same day that they were released … they (French authorities) released me.” However, French President Emmanuel Macron’s office has refuted any claims of a prisoner swap. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot emphasized the confidentiality of negotiations with Iran. Meanwhile, Iran’s state-run news agency IRNA reported an agreement between the two nations for the French nationals’ release in exchange for Esfandiari.
