The New York Knicks have secured the 2026 NBA Championship, overcoming the San Antonio Spurs in an exhilarating final game held in Texas. The victory came after a dramatic turnaround where the Knicks clawed back from a significant deficit.

Jalen Brunson emerged as the hero of the night, leading his team with an outstanding performance. The 29-year-old point guard, in his fourth season with the Knicks, achieved a remarkable feat by scoring 45 out of the Knicks’ 94 points. His contribution was pivotal in overturning a 16-point shortfall, and he became only the second player in NBA history to score 45 points on the road in a championship-deciding game. The other player to achieve this was Michael Jordan during the 1998 Finals against the Utah Jazz, as reported by Yahoo Sports.

Brunson’s performance has undoubtedly cemented his status among the Knicks’ greats. His exceptional display earned him the Finals MVP award, a testament to his influence throughout the series.

The emotional victory was shared with his father, Rick Brunson, a former NBA player and current assistant coach for the Knicks, who was visibly moved during the celebration.

Despite Karl-Anthony Towns’ lackluster performance—scoring only two points and fouling out with under two minutes left—the Knicks managed to rally without their star center. Towns’ early exit did not deter the Knicks from their path to victory.

The game saw intense moments in the final minutes, as reported by the New York Times: “The final four minutes were tense, with teams trading buckets and leads. Brunson’s 12-footer with 1:05 left gave the Knicks a 90-88 lead. Spurs rookie Dylan Harper, their best player on Saturday night, missed a 3, and Josh Hart sank a foul shot with 26.1 seconds remaining. He missed the second, but Mitchell Robinson, on the court because Knicks star center Karl-Anthony Towns fouled out, saved the possession with a rebound. Anunoby, New York’s Game 4 hero, made one of two free throws also to put the Knicks up four.”

“Stephon Castle, suffering through his worst game of the finals, made his first field goal of the game on a put-back dunk off a Victor Wembanyama missed 3 with 16.3 seconds left. The Knicks won the ensuing free throw contest, finished by Anunoby’s make with 7.7 seconds to go.”

“Wembanyama, the 22-year-old French sensation who is angling to be the next standard bearer for the sport, has to wait on that. He finished with 19 points and 14 boards. When his final 3-point try missed near the buzzer, the thousands of New York fans in the upper deck erupted in thunderous applause. Harper led the Spurs with 25 points off the bench.”

The Knicks’ triumph marks a significant achievement, as they ended the regular season in third place in the Eastern Conference with a record of 53 wins and 29 losses. This victory makes them the lowest-seeded team to win the NBA Finals since the 2022 Golden State Warriors.

New York fans, including celebrities like Spike Lee, Charles Oakley, and Clyde Frazier, traveled to witness the historic win, enhancing an already memorable night for the Knicks faithful.
