The Pennsylvania Supreme Court will continue to have Justice Kevin Dougherty on its bench, following a favorable decision by voters on Tuesday. This outcome represents a significant success for the Democratic Party, which aimed to uphold its 5-2 majority on the state’s highest court.
Judicial positions in Pennsylvania are initially filled through elections for 10-year terms. Subsequent terms require judges to undergo “retention elections,” where voters simply cast a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ vote to determine if the judge should remain in office. Justice Dougherty, who has been serving since 2016, was subject to this process.
The Associated Press confirmed Dougherty’s retention at 9:51 p.m. EST.
