Massive Excavator Demolishes Former Maricopa County Hospital Buildings

Giant Excavator Powers Through Historic Phoenix Hospital Demolition

In an ambitious demolition project in Phoenix, one of the world’s largest excavators is dismantling the old Maricopa County Hospital near 24th and Roosevelt streets. This colossal machine, a 5130B UHD excavator, weighs over 400 tons and stretches up to 150 feet high.

On Tuesday, this massive piece of equipment was actively engaged in tearing down the hospital’s facade just south of Roosevelt Street. According to Valleywise Health spokesperson Michael Murphy, the space is expected to be converted into additional parking facilities.

Originally known as the Maricopa County Medical Center, the hospital served the community for more than five decades. In 2024, it was replaced by the Valleywise Health Medical Center, located just half a block west of the historic site.

“Several other old buildings also were demolished before they began work on the hospital, including an old power plant, administration building and a physician’s office building,” Murphy explained.

The demolition of the hospital began in June and is projected to conclude by January 2026, Murphy added. This extensive project reflects a significant transformation in the area, paving the way for new developments.
