Navajo Nation Leadership Resolves Financial Oversight Dispute
Recent tensions within the Navajo Nation’s leadership have been centered around the role of the tribe’s acting controller, responsible for managing financial affairs. President Buu Nygren attempted to remove the current controller and appoint a successor, sparking a conflict now brought to resolution.
Sean McCabe has been confirmed as the legitimate controller through a formal agreement signed with President Nygren. This agreement guarantees McCabe’s backpay and legal expenses.
In late November, Nygren expressed regret in front of the Navajo Nation Council for sending messages with offensive language to council delegates. These messages, leaked by McCabe, showed Nygren urging McCabe to activate his government-issued purchase card, an action McCabe resisted due to budget constraints. This incident led to McCabe’s unexpected dismissal.
Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren, who was elected on a platform of change, is now facing challenges. A special prosecutor’s investigation has culminated in an ethics complaint seeking Nygren’s removal, a motion currently under the Navajo Nation Council’s consideration.
“I apologize for using hurtful words or disrespectful words,” said Nygren. “I used language that I shouldn’t have. In moments of great stress we don’t always, you know, act as our best selves. This was one such occasion for me.”
Nygren emphasized in a statement that the agreement with McCabe does not imply any acknowledgment of illegal actions or misconduct. He highlighted the agreement as a “good-faith resolution” aimed at maintaining stable government functions.
