Amid ongoing economic challenges, a growing number of Americans are expressing dissatisfaction with their tax burdens. Recent surveys reveal heightened concerns over both personal taxes and the perception of inequities in the tax system.
Increased Tax Frustration Among Americans
A recent Fox News poll highlights that a record number of Americans feel their taxes are too high. Conducted in late March, the survey shows increased discontent compared to the previous year. This sentiment comes despite recent tax reform efforts, like the tax law pushed by President Donald Trump, which aimed to reduce tax burdens.
The backdrop of this rising dissatisfaction includes a spike in inflation and sluggish economic growth, which may contribute to the perception that tax relief is insufficient. Notably, about 7 in 10 registered voters now believe their taxes are “too high,” up from 6 in 10 the previous year.
Concerns About Wealthy Tax Contributions
The feeling that wealthy individuals and corporations aren’t contributing their fair share is prevalent. According to a Pew Research Center poll, about 6 in 10 Americans are significantly troubled by this issue. This concern has been consistent in recent years.
In contrast, only about 4 in 10 adults are greatly bothered by their personal tax obligations. The divide is stark between political affiliations, with approximately 8 in 10 Democrats versus 4 in 10 Republicans expressing concern over the perceived unfairness in tax contributions from the wealthy.
Public Perception and Government Spending
Frustration extends beyond individual tax burdens to perceptions of government inefficiency. The Fox News poll indicates that 75% of registered voters believe a significant portion of government spending is wasteful. This view is particularly strong among Republican voters.
Alongside this, about half of Americans surveyed in a Gallup poll consider the income tax they pay to be unfair, a sentiment echoing past high levels of dissatisfaction.
Discontent with Trump’s Tax Policies
Amidst these concerns, dissatisfaction is also directed at President Trump’s handling of tax issues. The Fox News poll reports that 64% of registered voters disapprove of Trump’s tax management, an increase from previous years. This disapproval is particularly notable among independents.
Compounding this, an AP-NORC poll shows widespread belief that Trump’s policies have negatively impacted the cost of living, with significant portions of Democrats and independents holding this view.
