Russian Skiers Appeal Ban to Qualify for 2026 Winter Olympics

Amidst ongoing global sporting tensions, Russian athletes are making a significant legal push to reenter the competitive skiing arena. Their efforts come as they aim to participate in the 2026 Winter Olympics, despite facing bans due to geopolitical conflicts.

According to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), an appeal has been lodged by six Russian skiers, six Para-athletes, and the Russian ski federation. They are contesting a recent decision by the International Ski and Snowboard Federation, which extended their exclusion from competitions following Russia’s military actions in Ukraine.

The CAS has yet to schedule a hearing date, but the case is expected to proceed swiftly with the Milan-Cortina d’Ampezzo Olympics only three months away. This situation echoes a recent verdict where Russian lugers successfully challenged their ban, mandating the International Luge Federation to evaluate athletes for neutral participation.

Under the guidance of the International Olympic Committee, athletes in most Olympic sports can compete under a neutral flag, provided they have not publicly backed the invasion of Ukraine and do not have affiliations with state security or military agencies.

Previously, some athletes from Russia and Belarus have participated in international events, such as the Paris Summer Games, under neutral auspices, foregoing national symbols such as their flag, anthem, and team colors.
