Authorities Search for Mother of TV Host Savannah Guthrie, Urgent Appeal for Public Assistance
Pima County officials are intensifying efforts to locate Nancy Guthrie, 84, mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie, who authorities say was taken from her Tucson home against her will last weekend.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has emphasized the critical nature of the situation, noting Guthrie’s reliance on necessary medication for survival. “We hope we are” looking for her alive, Nanos stated.
In a press briefing on Tuesday, Sheriff Nanos called upon the public to assist by providing any information that might lead to Guthrie’s whereabouts. While the investigation has progressed, few new details have been disclosed to maintain its integrity.
“He [Nanos] has stated that he does not want to get into specific details about evidence in order to protect the integrity of the investigation,” according to a department statement. The authorities are examining reports of ransom notes and collaborating with tech companies to analyze home surveillance and potential pacemaker data.
Signs of Forced Entry and Ongoing Investigation
Sources familiar with the case report signs of forced entry at Guthrie’s home, and evidence suggests a nighttime kidnapping. Although the sheriff’s department has yet to identify a suspect or person of interest, they are reviewing various data sources, including local surveillance and cellphone tower activity.
Investigators do not believe the incident was motivated by theft or ransom, despite media reports of purported ransom notes, which are being scrutinized by law enforcement.
Family’s Response and Public Support
The absence of Nancy Guthrie was first noted when she did not attend church services on Sunday, prompting a family member to search her home and contact authorities. Initial search efforts involved drones and dogs, but as of Monday, the operation shifted focus from a search to a criminal investigation.
In a heartfelt plea, Savannah Guthrie, who has been in Arizona since the incident, used social media to ask for prayers: “Raise your prayers with us and believe with us that she will be lifted by them in this very moment. Bring her home.”

Nancy Guthrie is known to many through her daughter’s television presence. Savannah Guthrie has often spoken about her mother’s strength, especially after the death of her father when Savannah was a teenager. “When my dad died, our family just hung onto each other for dear life because it was such a shock,” she shared on “Today” in 2017.
