Trump Skips Supreme Court Tariff Hearing; Treasury Secretary Attends

The impending decision of the U.S. Supreme Court regarding the legality of President Donald Trump’s tariffs, a cornerstone of his economic agenda, has garnered widespread attention. While President Trump will not attend the hearing, his treasury secretary will be present, highlighting the case’s significance to the administration.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent expressed his intention to attend the hearing in person, stating on Fox News Channel’s “Jesse Watters Primetime,” “I’m actually going to go and sit the — hopefully in the front row and listen — have a ringside seat.” Trump’s absence, he noted, is to prevent distractions, emphasizing, “It’s not about me, it’s about our country,” as Trump remarked to reporters.

The Supreme Court will examine whether Trump exceeded his legal authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) by imposing broad import taxes. This follows lower court rulings that found the tariffs beyond the president’s powers under the IEEPA, although they have remained while the Supreme Court deliberates.

Bessent addressed concerns over his attendance potentially pressuring the justices, asserting, “They can say what they want. I am there to emphasize that this is an economic emergency.”

Characterizing the hearing as crucial for national security, Bessent has indicated the administration is prepared for alternative actions should the court rule unfavorably. He reassured, “there are lots of other authorities that we can operate under,” and expressed confidence in the stability of existing trade agreements, stating, “we also have numerous trade deals in effect. So I don’t think that countries are going to back out of the trade deals.”
