Two Romanians Convicted in Stabbing of Journalist in London Court

Conviction in London Stabbing of Persian-Language Journalist Raises Questions of International Influence

In a significant development, two Romanian nationals have been found guilty in London for their roles in the attack on a Persian-language journalist, an incident that prosecutors claim was orchestrated by the Iranian government. The verdict was delivered at Woolwich Crown Court, where Nandito Badea, 21, and George Stana, 25, were convicted of grievous bodily harm with intent.

The case centers around the March 2024 stabbing of Pouria Zeraati, a journalist with Iran International, a London-based television station critical of Iran’s regime. Zeraati was attacked outside his residence in Wimbledon but has since recovered and returned to work.

Badea, a former professional soccer player, was identified as one of the attackers, while Stana was implicated as the getaway driver. The pair fled the UK via Heathrow Airport, later being apprehended in Romania in December 2024 and extradited back to face trial. Meanwhile, a third suspect, David Andrei, is still undergoing legal proceedings in Romania.

Chief Superintendent Kris Wright of Counter Terrorism Policing London stated, “This was a targeted and violent attack and it was the prosecution’s case during the trial that it was carried out on behalf of the Iranian regime.”

The court’s ruling stops short of officially attributing the attack to Tehran, though the judge is expected to address this during sentencing on July 3. Iran’s diplomatic representative in the UK has denied any involvement from Tehran.

Iran International has faced threats due to its critical reporting on Iran’s government, leading to a temporary relocation to Washington, D.C., in 2023 after a surge in state-backed threats. The broadcaster has since resumed operations in a new London location.

British security agencies, including MI5, have reported an increase in Iranian plots targeting opposition media and Jewish communities. MI5’s director, Ken McCallum, highlighted the disruption of over 20 potential Iran-backed plots within the past year, as detailed in an October announcement.

Furthermore, an Iranian-affiliated group has claimed responsibility for a series of antisemitic incidents in London, including stabbings and attempted arson at synagogues.
