Virginia Man Receives Life Sentence for Double Murder in Au Pair Affair
In Fairfax, Virginia, a dramatic courtroom decision concluded the trial of Brendan Banfield, a former IRS law enforcement officer. Banfield was found guilty of orchestrating a lethal scheme involving his wife and another man, resulting in a life sentence without parole. The case, involving a love affair with the family’s au pair, has gripped public attention.
Banfield claimed he acted in self-defense, stating he shot Joseph Ryan to stop an assault on his wife. However, prosecutors argued that Banfield, with the aid of Juliana Peres Magalhães, the family’s Brazilian au pair, had devised a plan to eliminate his wife, Christine Banfield, and use Ryan as a scapegoat.
Judge Penney Azcarate described Banfield’s actions as “evil and calculated,” emphasizing the callousness of his acts. She highlighted the impact on the Banfields’ young daughter, saying, “Brendan Banfield took everything from her.” The mandatory life sentence for aggravated murder in Virginia was imposed, along with additional sentences for child endangerment and a firearms charge.
Despite proclaiming his innocence and expressing love for his wife, Banfield’s lack of remorse influenced Judge Azcarate’s decision. She expressed no hesitation in ensuring he remained imprisoned for life.
During the sentencing, emotional testimonies were given by family members. Christine Banfield’s sister, Danielle Hocker, remembered her sibling as “kind, caring, reliable, and selfless,” sharing cherished memories from their childhood. Ryan’s mother, Deidre Fisher, described her son as a compassionate individual who cared for his grandmother and had a soft spot for neglected animals.
Magalhães provided crucial testimony during the trial, revealing Banfield’s intentions to marry her and start a family, contingent on “getting rid of” his wife first. She explained the financial and custodial motivations behind Banfield’s reluctance to divorce. Magalhães also testified about their plan to stage a violent break-in by impersonating Christine Banfield online to lure Ryan to their home. On the day of the murder, she assisted Banfield in the setup and execution of the deadly encounter.
The case, often referred to as the “au pair affair,” concluded with Magalhães pleading guilty to manslaughter and receiving a 10-year prison sentence following her testimony against Banfield. The trial and its aftermath continue to resonate, shedding light on the calculated measures taken in the name of love and deceit.
