Gila Bend Library to Reopen in Original Building After Renovations

Library Services to Return to Gila Bend After Year-Long Hiatus

Residents of Gila Bend will soon welcome back their local library, marking the end of nearly a year without access to its services. This development comes as a relief to the community, which has relied on library resources for many years.

Maricopa County previously managed a library in a town-owned building in Gila Bend, a partnership characterized by an arrangement where the county handled library operations while the town took responsibility for facility maintenance. Samantha Mears from the Maricopa County Library District explained, “The way our intergovernmental agreements often work is that the county funds library operations, and then the building partner funds the maintenance of that facility.”

Seeking more space, the county later relocated the library to a facility managed by the Gila Bend Unified School District (GBUSD). However, in May 2025, the school district terminated this partnership. “Unfortunately, the school district did come to us and let us know that they weren’t able to manage the funds it was taking to cover the cost of keeping the building open that many hours a week,” Mears noted.

In response, the county has finalized a new agreement with the town of Gila Bend to return the library to its original location. The building will undergo renovations over the next six months, after which it will reopen to serve the community once again.
