Analyzing Michigan Governor Whitmer’s European Trade Trip
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer embarked on a week-long European trade trip, starting in Paris, to promote Michigan’s aerospace and defense industries. This move comes at a time when the U.S. commitment to NATO alliances is uncertain, and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has created tensions in the region.
Building International Relationships
During her visit to the Eurosatory conference in Paris, Governor Whitmer aimed to strengthen relationships with U.S. allies and showcase Michigan’s expertise in advanced manufacturing, aerospace, defense, and innovation. Eurosatory is a prominent event focusing on security, defense, and weapons systems.
Promoting Michigan Businesses
At the conference, a dozen Michigan companies were featured at a Michigan pavilion, highlighting the state’s presence in the defense and security industry. According to the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), defense and security represent a $30 billion industry in Michigan.
Expanding Opportunities for Michiganders
Whitmer’s mission in Europe aims to create new opportunities for good-paying jobs in Michigan. Last year, the state secured a commitment from the Trump administration to establish a new fighter mission at Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Macomb County.
Continued Engagement
Following her time in Paris, Governor Whitmer will travel to Belgium and Luxembourg with a delegation that includes business leaders and officials from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. This is her second trade trip to Europe this year, having previously visited Germany and Italy in February.
Capitalizing on Global Dynamics
President Donald Trump’s presence in France for a summit of the Group of 7 leaders underscores the strained relationships between the U.S. and NATO countries. Whitmer aims to leverage the growing security and weapons spending in response to these tensions to benefit Michigan’s aerospace and defense industries.
