Rising Concerns in Maricopa County as West Nile Virus Claims First Life
Health authorities in Maricopa County have reported the first death associated with the West Nile virus this season. Additionally, there has been a noticeable increase in confirmed cases compared to the previous year.
The deceased has been identified as an elderly man with existing health issues. This highlights the heightened risk for individuals with compromised health conditions.
While many people infected with the West Nile virus remain asymptomatic, approximately 20% may experience symptoms akin to the flu. According to the Maricopa County Department of Public Health, severe outcomes or fatalities occur in about 1 in 150 cases.
This virus is primarily transmitted through mosquito bites. As of now, there are 17 confirmed cases in the county, a significant jump from the four cases recorded at the same time last year.
