A routine drive turned into an encounter with law enforcement for a New Jersey man, raising questions about racial profiling. Jamaal Holmes, aged 34, says his stop by police was unjust, triggered by his choice of clothing—a red hoodie—while he was driving.
Details of the Traffic Stop
Holmes, a resident of Jackson Township, recounted his experience in an interview with News 12 on June 11. He was en route to pick up his son when he realized a police vehicle was tailing him after he left his apartment complex. The officers eventually pulled him over at a shopping plaza, citing his appearance as the reason for their suspicion.
In a video filmed by Holmes, one officer explained, “I was a little concerned. It looked like you were reaching down just like hiding your face. You’re wearing a sweatshirt in 80-degree weather.” Holmes questioned the officers’ motives, suggesting their actions were racially prejudiced.
During the stop, officers also pointed out that his vehicle’s inspection was expired. Holmes, aware of his rights, remained in his car, leading to a rapid escalation. The police forcibly removed him, resulting in his arrest. As seen in the video, Holmes protested the officers’ actions, exclaiming, “Yo, why are you grabbing me, bro? Why are you ripping my papers?”
Holmes was taken to the police station and released shortly thereafter. He received summonses for obstruction and resisting arrest, as well as a ticket for an expired inspection sticker, according to a report by the New York Post.
Following the incident, Holmes remains convinced that racial bias played a role in the traffic stop, expressing concern for his son’s future experiences with law enforcement. “When young white people wear hoods, they don’t get called suspicious. But as soon as a young Black man is wearing a hood, it’s suspicious,” Holmes stated, visibly emotional about the implications for his son.
The Jackson police chief responded to the video and claims, stating, “Preliminary investigation shows the stop was lawful, the arrest was lawful, and officer actions are under investigation,” as reported by News 12.
