Navy’s 250th Anniversary: Trump Honors Sailors Amid Government Shutdown
In Norfolk, Virginia, President Donald Trump marked the Navy’s 250th anniversary with a spirited speech, amidst ongoing government shutdown tensions. His visit on Sunday underscored the Navy’s enduring legacy, while also spotlighting the political struggles in Washington.
The event drew an audience of about 10,000 sailors, who donned their dress-white uniforms as they gathered to hear the president. Trump’s speech, infused with campaign-like fervor, drew cheers and concluded with the iconic “YMCA” by Village People. “Let’s face it, this is a rally,” Trump acknowledged to the crowd.
The backdrop of the speech was set between a towering aircraft carrier and an amphibious assault ship, with a Navy fighter jet displaying the inscription, “President Donald J. Trump ‘45-47’” prominently under the cockpit window.
Navy planes flying overhead added to the high energy atmosphere, inspiring chants of “USA! USA! USA!” from the assembled sailors. During his address, Trump criticized Democratic lawmakers, blaming them for the government shutdown that forced military personnel to work without pay. “I want you to know that despite the current Democrat induced shutdown, we will get our service members every last penny. Don’t worry about it,” he assured, garnering applause.
The shutdown, now in its fifth day, has resulted in furloughs for thousands of federal employees and stalled key projects in Democrat-led cities such as New York and Chicago. The president accused Senate Democrats of blocking efforts to maintain government operations, citing their concerns over healthcare subsidies and Medicaid funding.
Joining the president at the event were First Lady Melania Trump, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Navy Secretary John Phelan, Veterans Affairs Secretary Doug Collins, and U.S. Rep. Ronny Jackson, R-Texas. Following his speech, Trump visited the USS George H.W. Bush, where he distributed challenge coins to sailors.
The Trumps observed a military demonstration from the aircraft carrier’s deck, witnessing Navy destroyers launch missiles, SEALs execute helicopter descents, and fighter jets take off into the Atlantic.
President Trump has increasingly leaned on military support, deploying troops in U.S. cities such as Los Angeles, Washington, and Portland. California Gov. Gavin Newsom has criticized these moves, citing blocked attempts to send troops to Portland.
In a recent speech, Trump diverged from traditional presidential decorum, referring to protesters as “animals” and “a foreign enemy,” unsettling some attendees. However, the Norfolk audience appeared more receptive, engaging with Trump’s humorous and political remarks.
At a recent Pentagon meeting, Trump proposed using cities as military training grounds, emphasizing the need for a strong military to address internal threats. Defense Secretary Hegseth announced a push to end “woke” culture, introducing new physical fitness standards for troops.
The administration’s efforts to reshape Pentagon culture align with its aim to use military resources for domestic priorities, including curbing unrest and crime. Additionally, Trump’s military initiatives include combatting drug cartels, leading to recent operations in the Caribbean.
