With the federal government shutdown putting strain on families, Arizona cities are stepping up to address the increasing need for food assistance. Both Flagstaff and Phoenix have initiated citywide food drives to bolster support for individuals and families facing food insecurity.
Flagstaff’s Extended Food Drive
Flagstaff has launched a comprehensive two-month-long initiative aimed at gathering food and necessities for those in need. According to Sarah Langley from the city, donations are accepted at various city facilities, including city hall and recreation centers. The distribution of the collected food is managed by the Flagstaff Family Food Center.
“We’re hearing from nonprofits in Flagstaff that this year they are experiencing really increased demand. The Flagstaff Family Food Center announced that they served over 50,000 meals in October,” Langley stated.

Phoenix Partners with St. Mary’s Food Bank
Phoenix has joined forces with St. Mary’s Food Bank to organize a food drive, encouraging residents to make monetary donations and drop off non-perishable food items at designated libraries and community centers. A city press release emphasized the need for protein-rich foods like canned meats, beans, peanut butter, and canned fruits and vegetables.
