AT&T CEO John Stankey Addresses Memo on Company Culture Changes

AT&T CEO Reflects on Cultural Shifts and Employee Adaptation

In a candid reflection on leadership decisions, John Stankey, CEO of AT&T, acknowledged his oversight in prioritizing company culture changes. His recent insights shed new light on an internal memo that sparked widespread discussion earlier this year.

Stankey’s memo, initially reported by Business Insider, emphasized a transition towards a “more market-based culture,” which prompted debates about workplace loyalty. During a recent appearance at the Wall Street Journal CEO Council Summit, Stankey elaborated on the memo’s intentions.

Reflecting on past decisions, Stankey admitted that he delayed the necessary “culture evolution” at AT&T. He noted that he should have prioritized it, alongside other corporate goals, to drive specific actions more effectively.

Alan Murray, president of the WSJ Leadership Institute, hinted that this delay might explain the timing of Stankey’s memo. Stankey responded, “The memo shouldn’t be over-rotated on. It’s one of a series of steps in trying to put a framework out there and remove excuses for leaders to lead,” clarifying the memo’s role in guiding business strategy.

The memo not only shared Stankey’s perspective but also empowered leaders to implement changes. “That memo outlined my point of view on it, and it gives leaders that want to lead all the air cover in the world they need to go and execute around that framework,” Stankey explained.

AT&T has been navigating significant transformations, including a return-to-office mandate requiring employees to work on-site five days a week. The memo urged employees to adapt to these shifts, stating, “We run a dynamic, customer-facing business, tackling large-scale, challenging initiatives. If the requirements dictated by this dynamic do not align to your personal desires, you have every right to find a career opportunity that is suitable to your aspirations and needs.”

At the summit, Stankey also highlighted AT&T’s efforts to promote AI adoption among employees. He emphasized the availability of tutorials and educational resources, underscoring the importance of upskilling. “I want to see who’s building their skill set, where they’re building, and this is just the next set of skills that people are going to have to have,” he stated.
