As the legal tech landscape evolves, Harvey, a promising AI startup, is contemplating its debut on the public market. With a recent valuation of $15.5 billion, the company has engaged in preliminary discussions with legal experts at Latham & Watkins about the prospect of going public, according to insiders.
While there is no immediate timeline for an IPO, Harvey is closely monitoring the performance of other tech companies as they go public. The startup’s potential market entry could be influenced by upcoming listings, such as Anthropic’s, which is anticipated before Thanksgiving and might surpass SpaceX’s record IPO. OpenAI is also expected to enter the public market by early 2027.
Currently, Harvey is a key player in the legal AI sector, serving over 3,500 clients, including a significant portion of the top US law firms and Fortune 500 companies. The company reported an annual recurring revenue of $400 million in September, which, although not as high as Anthropic’s $65 billion run rate, is comparable to other tech firms like Affirm and Snowflake at the time of their public offerings.
This fall, Harvey secured $550 million in funding from investors such as Diffusion, Lightspeed Venture Partners, and Goldman Sachs Alternatives, positioning itself for a potential market entry. The startup is also strengthening its leadership, with notable hires including Steve Zad as chief revenue officer, Keith Enright as chief strategy officer, and Rachel Hepworth as chief marketing officer.
Harvey’s co-founders, Winston Weinberg and Gabe Pereyra, have harnessed large language models to innovate in the legal tech space, capitalizing on a market that was previously underestimated due to its complexity and traditional practices. Today, the company collaborates with industry leaders like Latham & Watkins to develop custom tools, leveraging its software’s capabilities to transform legal document processing.
Latham & Watkins, having integrated Harvey’s technology into its operations, exemplifies the firm’s expertise in guiding companies to public offerings. Since 2016, Latham & Watkins has advised on 186 public offerings, raising over $101 billion, demonstrating its significant role in the IPO landscape.
