Fighter Jet and Helicopter Crash into South China Sea; Crew Rescued

In a dramatic sequence of events over the South China Sea, both a fighter jet and a helicopter operating from the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier experienced crashes within a mere half-hour. The quick response by the Navy’s Pacific Fleet ensured the safety of all involved personnel.

The incidents involved an MH-60R Sea Hawk helicopter and an F/A-18F Super Hornet fighter jet. The Sea Hawk’s three crew members and the two aviators from the Super Hornet were swiftly rescued and are reported to be in stable condition. The Navy has launched investigations to determine the exact causes behind the crashes.

From Air Force One, President Donald Trump commented on the crashes while en route to Tokyo, suggesting the possibility of “bad fuel” as a cause, and dismissed any notion of foul play, asserting transparency in the investigation process.

The USS Nimitz, on its way back to Naval Base Kitsap in Washington state, has been at the forefront of U.S. military deployments, particularly in the Middle East, responding to Houthi rebel attacks on commercial vessels. This deployment marks the vessel’s final mission before decommissioning.

The Navy has faced several operational challenges recently. The USS Harry S. Truman, also stationed in the Middle East, has dealt with a series of mishaps. Notably, a guided-missile cruiser, the USS Gettysburg, accidentally downed an F/A-18 jet from the Truman in December.

Further incidents involved an F/A-18 jet that slipped off the Truman’s deck into the Red Sea in April, and another jet went overboard during a landing in May after failing to catch the arresting cables, causing the pilots to eject. Thankfully, none of these incidents resulted in fatalities, though investigations are still ongoing.
