Navy Admiral Holsey to Retire Amid Controversy Over Drug Boat Strikes

Adm. Alvin Holsey to Retire from U.S. Southern Command Amidst Controversial Military Actions

The impending retirement of Admiral Alvin Holsey from the U.S. Southern Command has been announced, just as his brief tenure has witnessed intensified military operations. Holsey, who has been at the helm since November, plans to step down in December, as confirmed by both himself and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

Holsey’s departure comes in the wake of the U.S. military’s fifth recent operation targeting small drug-laden boats in the Caribbean. These operations have been a focal point of controversy, drawing criticism and raising legal questions from lawmakers. The Trump administration’s classification of alleged drug traffickers as “unlawful combatants” has sparked debate over the legality of using military force in these instances.

On Capitol Hill, the attacks have been a point of contention. While some Republicans are seeking more clarity from the White House on the legal basis for these strikes, Democrats have voiced concerns about potential violations of U.S. and international law.

In a statement posted on the U.S. Southern Command’s Facebook page, Holsey expressed pride in his service, stating, “It’s been an honor to serve our nation, the American people and support and defend our Constitution for over 37 years.” He commended his team for their contributions to national defense and expressed confidence in their continued mission to uphold global freedom.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth took to X to express his gratitude towards Holsey, recognizing his “decades of service to our country” and wishing him and his family well in future endeavors. Hegseth praised Holsey for his “unwavering commitment to mission, people, and nation.”

No further details have been released by U.S. Southern Command or the Pentagon, both of which referred to Hegseth’s social media statements for additional information. The New York Times initially reported on Holsey’s upcoming retirement.
