North Korea Shows Submarine Progress as Kim Jong Un Criticizes South Korea’s Naval Ambitions
In a significant development for its military capabilities, North Korea has unveiled new images showcasing the advancement of its nuclear-powered submarine construction. The photos, released by the state media, depict a nearly completed hull of the submarine, marking a pivotal step in North Korea’s naval modernization efforts.
According to the Korean Central News Agency, the submarine, described as an 8,700-ton-class nuclear-propelled vessel, is expected to be equipped with nuclear weapons. Leader Kim Jong Un, during his inspection of the shipyard, labeled South Korea’s endeavors to obtain similar technology, with support from former U.S. President Donald Trump, as a “severe violation” of North Korea’s security.
Kim remarked on South Korea’s plans, emphasizing the necessity for North Korea to advance its naval capabilities. He referred to the completion of the submarine as an “epoch-making” development aimed at enhancing the nation’s nuclear deterrence against perceived threats.
Although the precise timeline of Kim’s visit to the shipyard wasn’t provided, the release of images displaying the submarine’s construction progress indicates potential readiness for sea trials in the coming months. Moon Keun-sik, a submarine expert, noted the vessel’s largely finished hull suggests major components, such as the engine, may already be installed.
Kim’s Strategic Military Goals
The construction of a nuclear-powered submarine aligns with Kim Jong Un’s broader military objectives, announced in 2021, which include the development of advanced weaponry like solid-fueled intercontinental ballistic missiles, hypersonic weapons, and spy satellites. Recently, North Korea unveiled a new naval destroyer, which Kim praised for boosting the country’s nuclear strike capabilities.
A functioning nuclear-powered submarine capable of extended stealth operations and underwater missile launches would pose significant challenges for North Korea’s neighbors, as such activities are difficult to detect. However, questions remain about North Korea’s ability to acquire the necessary resources and technology under international sanctions.
Speculation persists about North Korea’s potential collaboration with Russia, possibly obtaining crucial technological support in exchange for military aid. While some analysts suspect North Korea may have sought a reactor from Russia, Moon suggests the submarine’s reactor might be domestically designed with potential Russian assistance.
South Korea’s Naval Aspirations
South Korea, meanwhile, is pursuing its own nuclear-powered submarine project. During a summit with Trump, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung sought U.S. backing for these efforts, reinforcing commitments to increase defense spending. Trump expressed openness to sharing technology for this purpose, though specifics remain unclear.
In other developments, North Korea reportedly conducted antiair missile tests, as confirmed by South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff. This comes amid escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula, with North Korea accelerating its military programs and strengthening ties with Moscow following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Efforts by the U.S. and South Korea to resume negotiations with North Korea have stalled since 2019, following a failed summit with Trump. North Korea’s recent actions indicate a continued commitment to bolstering its military capabilities amidst ongoing geopolitical challenges.
