Ship Parade on Delaware River Celebrates 250th Navy and Marine Birthdays

Philadelphia Honors 250 Years of Naval and Marine Excellence with a Grand Parade

In a vivid display of naval heritage, Philadelphia’s Delaware River hosted a magnificent parade on Thursday to commemorate the 250th anniversaries of the United States Navy and Marine Corps. The event, part of a larger celebration, featured a flotilla of distinguished ships, including the USS Lassen, USS Billings, and USS Cooperstown, accompanied by a spectacular military flyover.

Over the coming days, thousands are expected to join in the festivities, which promise a vibrant mix of events such as a veterans’ reunion, a lively downtown street parade, and a concert headlined by the iconic Patti LaBelle alongside performances from the Navy band and Marine Corps Drum and Bugle Corps. According to organizers, similar commemorations are set to occur at military bases globally.

Despite a government shutdown impacting numerous federal entities, the naval and marine festivities proceeded unhindered. Queries to the Navy’s press office regarding potential disruptions went unanswered.

Vice Admiral John Gumbleton, addressing a gathering at the Delaware River waterfront, joined by Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker and the governors of Pennsylvania and New Jersey, emphasized the dual significance of this celebration as it heralds the nation’s semiquincentennial next year. He urged civilians to engage with both active and retired military personnel, highlighting the invaluable contributions of service members.

“For every missile that destroys a threat, for every jet aircraft launched, for every engine that steams, none of this happens without a sailor behind it,” Gumbleton noted. “The ships are cool, the jets are cool, everything looks cool, but it’s the people — it’s those sailors, it’s those Marines, that get it done,” he emphasized.
