Detroit’s Population Grows for Third Consecutive Year

The Resurgence of Detroit: Population Growth and Economic Progress

Detroit, once synonymous with decline, is experiencing a revitalization as its population grew for the third consecutive year, according to the latest U.S. Census Bureau estimates. Over the past three years, the city saw an increase of close to 15,000 residents, with a rise of 3,200 in 2023, 6,600 in 2024, and 5,060 in 2025.

The growth rate in Detroit slightly outpaced the state, showcasing the city’s positive momentum. Mayor Mary Sheffield attributes this resurgence to concerted efforts to enhance safety in neighborhoods, create job opportunities, expand housing options, and improve city services.

Mayor Sheffield expressed, “For decades the story told about Detroit was always one of decline. But today the numbers tell a different story, they tell the real story of what is happening in our city. Long-term Detroiters are choosing to stay, and new residents are choosing to call Detroit home.”

Trisha Stein, Detroit’s Chief Strategy Officer, emphasized the importance of an accurate census, as it directly impacts federal and state funding allocation. The city has been engaged in a legal battle with the Census Bureau since the 2020 count to ensure fairness and accuracy in the census process.

Efforts to boost the incomes of Detroit residents are also underway, as the city continues to address its high poverty rate, which exceeded 30% in 2024. The collective focus on economic progress and community well-being underscores Detroit’s ongoing transformation and promise for the future.
