Flint Water Settlement Payments Issued, Residents Begin Receiving Awards

Flint Water Settlement Payments Issued to Residents

Residents of Flint, Michigan, are slowly receiving their long-awaited compensation from the Flint water settlement. This week, another round of letters notifying individuals of their awards was released as part of the federal class-action settlement worth over $600 million.

In 2014, Flint’s water source was switched to the Flint River, leading to lead contamination due to the lack of corrosion control treatments in the outdated water treatment plant. The settlement, reached in 2020 and finalized in 2023, aims to compensate residents for the harm caused by exposure to contaminated water.

As of now, payments are being made to individuals with approved property claims, with adult personal injury claims expected to receive payments next month. Melissa Mays, a Flint resident involved in the lawsuit, highlighted the importance of using the money for home repairs, medical bills, and other essential expenses.

Despite the progress in distributing payments, some residents like Mays express frustration over the lengthy process. However, the settlement website reports that nearly 7,872 out of 11,000 approved individuals have already received their compensation.

Adults with approved personal injury claims are awaiting partial payments, which are anticipated to begin next month after receiving authorization from a federal judge. Minors at the time of the crisis are set to receive the majority of the settlement amount.
