Gun Shop Owner Faces Prison for Encouraging Straw Purchases

In a significant legal development, a Chandler-based gun shop owner is facing potential imprisonment after confessing to facilitating illegal firearm transactions. The case highlights ongoing concerns about gun sales regulations and enforcement.

Alejandro Montemayor, the operator of AV AZ Firearms located in Phoenix, has admitted to federal charges involving the encouragement of straw purchases. According to federal prosecutors, Montemayor assisted customers in completing government paperwork to purchase firearms, instructing them to falsely claim ownership of the guns, despite both parties knowing the firearms were intended for others.

The plea agreement reveals that Montemayor orchestrated the transfer of 72 firearms through these straw purchase arrangements. Additionally, he confessed to failing to report more than a dozen transactions where sales surpassed the $10,000 mark.

Sentencing for Montemayor is scheduled for August 17, where the court will determine the consequences of his actions.
