Phoenix City Council to Address Transparency in Immigration Enforcement
As concerns about potential large-scale federal immigration operations loom, the Phoenix City Council is set to discuss the development of a transparency initiative. This meeting aims to ensure that residents receive reliable information, guidance, and resources during such events.
In a letter addressed to the city manager, the Phoenix mayor emphasized the city’s duty to provide its residents with accurate information. The letter also highlighted the necessity of adhering to federal and state laws while addressing council members’ concerns about possible civil rights violations by immigration authorities.
The initiative under consideration would involve city staff designing a framework to document any abuses, facilitate multilingual communication, and implement other protective measures. The goal is to ensure transparency and accountability in the face of immigration enforcement actions.
Amid these discussions, at least one advocacy group plans to attend the meeting to urge the city to shield residents from actions by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
