Phoenix Grants Tackle Food Deserts with 2030 Food Action Plan

Initiative to Combat Food Inequity in Phoenix Through Grant Program

In an effort to tackle the persistent issue of food inequity affecting Phoenix communities, a new grant initiative has been launched. The city aims to support organizations that help improve access to nutritious food options.

The grant program, known as the Food Systems Grants, is a crucial component of Phoenix’s 2030 Food Action Plan. The plan highlights that nearly all of the 55 food deserts in Maricopa County are situated within Phoenix, underscoring the importance of this initiative.

Karen Ibarra, representing the city’s Office of Environmental Programs, explained the grant’s purpose: “So the food systems grant provides up to $20,000 to support projects that essentially empower Phoenix residents to grow access, cook, share and eat healthy, affordable and culturally relevant food.”

This funding could facilitate the development of community or school gardens, mobile markets, or the distribution of food boxes, as well as enhance the availability of food pantries in food desert areas.

Ibarra further noted, “And so we know that there are many Phoenix residents who, you know, either just don’t have the time to cook and eat healthy affordable food or may not be able to access healthy food.”

Organizations such as businesses and nonprofits interested in applying for the grant must adhere to specified guidelines. These include ensuring that the funds benefit Phoenix residents and are utilized within a 12-month period. Applications for grants are due by 5 p.m. on August 31.

In the past, the Valleywise Health Foundation, Valley of the Sun YMCA, and Food Systems Studio have been among the beneficiaries of these grants, highlighting the program’s reach and impact.
