Young Politician Aims to Make History in Bowie Mayoral Race
In a groundbreaking move, 23-year-old Rebecca Pearce has entered the political arena by announcing her candidacy for mayor of Bowie, Maryland. This makes her the youngest contender in the city’s history to vie for the mayoral seat. Her announcement came in late February, signaling a fresh wave of youthful enthusiasm and ambition in the local political landscape.
A native of Prince George’s County, Pearce shared her long-standing passion for politics in an interview with PGCTV on March 12. She expressed that the current mayoral race provided the perfect opportunity to pursue her dream of public service. “I am running because I always knew I was always going to go into office and I decided if not now, then when?” Pearce affirmed. “I love people, I love community, I love investing back into the community that ultimately built me.”
Mayoral Election Set Amidst Leadership Transition
The special election for the Bowie mayoral position is scheduled for April 7, following the resignation of former Mayor Tim Adams. Adams left office in February after being appointed to the Prince George’s County Council, creating a need for new leadership in the city.
Rebecca Pearce’s Vision for Bowie
Rebecca Pearce’s mayoral campaign emphasizes affordability for families, with plans to reduce property taxes and manage utility costs. Her platform, detailed on her campaign website, aims to bolster local schools by enhancing collaboration and providing necessary resources for student success. Additionally, she envisions a stronger local economy through improved safety, support for small businesses, and strategic development of infrastructure and essential services.
Pearce is also committed to increasing accountability in city services, such as waste management, and fostering a culture of professionalism and respect within local government operations.
Experience and Leadership
Pearce’s trajectory in leadership began at a young age, serving as class president at Benjamin Tasker Middle School and later as Student Body President at Bowie High School. She graduated in the top 10% of her class in 2020 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from Howard University, completing it with honors in three years.
Her professional experience includes roles as a law clerk intern working on legislative efforts in Maryland and advocacy with One Fair Wage to eliminate subminimum wages for tipped workers. Pearce has also been involved in political campaigns, managing various aspects such as fundraising and communications. Currently, she is an Account Executive at a political consulting firm, advocating for policies that align with community needs.
As the youngest candidate, Pearce emphasizes the importance of future planning and youth investment. She believes effective leadership involves attentive listening and making decisions that serve the community’s diverse demographics, including families, seniors, and young professionals.
On March 22, Pearce shared her insights on social media, encouraging young people to pursue their dreams and make impactful changes. “The greatest gift has been the community that I’ve been blessed with and the opportunity to encourage young adults in their early 20s to step out of their comfort zone and be the change they’ve been advocating for since they were young,” she wrote. “If you’re reading this and feeling inspired, I want you to know that the sky is the limit. Our time is NOW. The future is ours and it’s time for us to set our path straight, not just for ourselves, but for our children and their children after them.”
