Trump’s Reflecting Pool Renovation: A $14 Billion Algae-Covered Mess

Controversy Surrounds Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Renovation

Recent developments at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool have garnered significant attention, with allegations of vandalism and a controversial renovation project leading to public discourse. The Trump administration has reported five arrests and issued five additional citations related to alleged vandalism at the site.

The administration’s track record of investigations into alleged misconduct has been questioned, with critics suggesting these actions are attempts to divert attention from other issues. The Reflecting Pool, recently renovated at a cost of $14 billion, has become a focal point of President Trump’s discussions, overshadowing previous projects.

Experts have noted that despite the extensive renovation efforts, the pool’s appearance has deteriorated, showcasing a “Un-Drained Swamp Green” color rather than the intended “American Flag Blue.” Photos and videos circulating online highlight this discrepancy, drawing public criticism.

Tourist Lyndel Monros expressed concerns to NBC News, stating, “It’s not American blue, it’s very green. I’m not sure what’s going on, but it kind of looks like there’s a septic leak going on, to be honest.”

President Trump has consistently mentioned the Reflecting Pool in his public addresses, comparing it to other monumental structures and emphasizing its significance. However, the pool’s condition post-renovation has become a point of contention.

In response to the issues, Trump held discussions with contractors and has suggested the pool may need to be drained again. He has accused vandals of causing damage, claiming a “250-foot-long gash” in the pool’s facade, despite previous assertions of the structure’s resilience.

Amidst these claims, former U.S. Olympic canoeist David “Davey” Hearn was among those detained in connection with the alleged vandalism. Hearn reported being held for five hours after interacting with a piece of the pool’s detached coating.

The five arrests and five additional citations to other people have come in the wake of Trump saying Saturday, with no evidence so far, that vandals at the Reflecting Pool cut a 250-foot-long “gash into the beautiful facade of what took so much work, competence, and money to build and complete.”

Among those arrested was former U.S. Olympic canoeist David “Davey” Hearn, who previously told NBC News he was detained for five hours Friday after touching a piece of detached coating at the Reflecting Pool.

The federal government has issued warnings to visitors about potential felony charges for removing materials from the pool area. The National Guard has been deployed to secure the site amidst ongoing clean-up efforts.

This situation reflects broader concerns regarding the administration’s handling of the Reflecting Pool project and its implications for public perception.
