In a dramatic turn of events during the NBA Finals, two individuals have been permanently banned from all NBA arenas. This follows an incident where one of them stormed the court mid-game during Game 1 between the San Antonio Spurs and the New York Knicks, seemingly attempting to take a selfie with Spurs star Victor Wembanyama.
The interruption took place in the fourth quarter, causing a brief halt in the game. While one of the individuals ran onto the court, the NBA has not detailed the involvement of the second person who also received a lifetime ban.
An NBA spokesperson confirmed the bans, stating, “The individual who entered the court area during Game 1 of The Finals was arrested and will be banned for life from all NBA arenas. A second individual will also receive a lifetime ban for his role in the incident.” The arrested individual is reportedly a juvenile, according to sources speaking anonymously to the Associated Press.
Security swiftly intervened, removing the court invader without any physical altercation occurring with Wembanyama or any players from the Knicks. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver commented on the situation, saying, “I even hesitate to describe that person as a fan. They seemed to have some ulterior motive for doing so.”
Despite the unexpected incident, Wembanyama remained untroubled, noting, “I’ve never been in that situation. I didn’t know how to act.” He likened the event to a previous disruption when a bat flew into the arena, briefly halting a game against Minnesota in January 2024.
The game resumed after a short pause of 1 minute and 29 seconds. Spurs coach Mitch Johnson reflected, “I don’t think it was an event at all. I thought security got him out of there. I think everybody moved on to the next play.” Silver praised the officiating crew for their handling of the situation, emphasizing the importance of security in sports events.
League Probes Incident Involving Jalen Brunson
In another instance of concerning fan behavior during the same game, New York Knicks guard Jalen Brunson, who scored 30 points, appeared disturbed by comments made by a courtside spectator. The NBA is investigating the comments directed at Brunson, although he chose not to comment on the matter.
Teammate Josh Hart remarked, “To be honest, I didn’t even see what happened. I heard something about it. I didn’t really see it. I don’t know. He’s always pretty calm, pretty composed. I’m sure the fans probably said something crazy to kind of get him going.”
Fan conduct remains a focal point for the NBA, which has reiterated the necessity for diligent enforcement of the NBA Fan Code of Conduct. The league issued a memo at the season’s start, urging teams to ensure staff are trained to recognize and manage inappropriate behavior. A video outlining these conduct standards is played at every game.
The league stressed, “It is critical that teams and arenas vigorously enforce the Code of Conduct and not tolerate any misconduct that impacts our players, fans, or otherwise disrupts the game.”
