This story is based on an interview with Amy Leaitu, 56, of Bellevue, Washington, an HR analyst for a 911 call center. It has been edited for length and clarity.
Every weekday evening, Amy Leaitu and her husband Dominic find themselves in the bar of their 22-story building in Bellevue, Washington, mingling with neighbors. Their interactions resemble a modern-day “Cheers” group, the iconic 1980s TV show, highlighting their fondness for communal gatherings.
Having moved into a senior living facility, the couple enjoys the company of residents, many of whom are older, forming a significant part of their decision to relocate. This lifestyle choice was inspired by Amy’s parents, who experienced the joys of a 55+ community while splitting their time between Vancouver, Washington, and a Las Vegas complex.
When visiting her parents, Amy observed the vibrant community life filled with activities like pickleball and gardening, sparking the idea of adopting a similar lifestyle.
The idea of downsizing became compelling when their daughter, Bree, left for college in 2016. Transitioning from a three-bedroom house to a one-bedroom apartment, the Leaitus embraced minimalism, focusing on experiences over possessions.
Exploring Senior Living
While considering further downsizing, Amy revisited the concept of senior living communities. They discovered The Watermark, a newly constructed facility suitable for residents aged 55 and above, located just a 15-minute walk from the city center.
Amy was immediately smitten with a studio apartment, appreciating its efficient design. Initially hesitant, Dominic became enthusiastic after attending events hosted by the community, where the couple connected with like-minded future neighbors.
A Lifestyle Like a Cruise
Dominic’s interest was piqued by the exceptional dining options within the complex, featuring three restaurants, which he found impressive as a food enthusiast. The monthly rent of $3,760 included utilities and amenities like WiFi and basic cable, as well as a point system for dining and guest accommodations.
Since moving in October 2024, the Leaitus have embraced their new home, likening it to a cruise ship experience, where their apartment serves as a cabin amidst an active community.
Despite being the youngest residents, with the average age being 76, Amy and Dominic find the community diverse and engaging. They often hear stories of others’ adventures, gaining insights and wisdom from their neighbors.
Embracing Community Activities
Although their full-time jobs limit participation in daytime programs, the couple enjoys group outings and events, such as trips to Cirque du Soleil and the Seattle Aquarium. Content with their current lifestyle, Amy and Dominic have no immediate plans to leave, cherishing the vibrant community they are part of.
