Halloween in Washington, D.C., came with an unexpected scare this year — one that had nothing to do with costumes or candy. A massive Boeing 747 roared low over the nation’s capital on Thursday evening, catching residents, city officials, and even federal agencies almost entirely off guard.
The aircraft in question was the Qatari-donated Boeing 747-8i — the same jet that carries the designation Air Force One when President Donald Trump is aboard. On Thursday evening, it conducted a low-altitude pass over D.C. to mark the Halloween holiday, flying over the National Mall and sweeping past — and at points below — the Washington Monument before making two passes directly above the White House.
The timing coincided with the White House hosting its annual tradition of welcoming trick-or-treaters. Video of the flyover was posted to social media shortly after it occurred, showing the massive jet cutting through the evening sky at a strikingly low altitude.
How Low Did It Fly?
According to reporting from The Washington Post, the aircraft flew at altitudes ranging between 400 and 1,000 feet over parts of the city. To put that in perspective, the Washington Monument — a fixture on the skyline — stands at approximately 555 feet. That means the jet, in certain areas, was flying lower than the top of one of D.C.’s most recognizable landmarks. Official videos shared on social media by the White House captured the aircraft passing just above rooftops and buildings throughout the District.
Officials Given Little Warning
What alarmed many beyond the aircraft’s altitude was how little advance notice local officials received. The D.C. Council remarked online that they, the Pentagon, and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport were each given only a 15-minute heads-up before the flyover took place, stating:
“It startled many, including us.”
A public alert through AlertDC was issued to residents at approximately 5:20 p.m., notifying them that a flyover would occur over the National Mall area within the next hour. A Federal Aviation Administration spokesperson confirmed to Military Times that the flyover had been coordinated with the agency but declined to say when exactly they were informed about the planned flight.
Residents Rattled on Social Media
For many D.C. residents who witnessed the aircraft overhead, the experience was unsettling. Social media filled quickly with reactions from people startled by the sudden appearance of a jumbo jet flying at such a low level over a densely populated urban area. One resident, posting online, said they genuinely believed a plane was about to crash.
The anxiety is understandable given recent history. Just under a year ago, a fatal crash between an American Airlines flight and an Army Black Hawk UH-60 helicopter occurred midair over the Potomac River near Reagan National Airport, killing all 67 people aboard both aircraft. That disaster remains fresh in the minds of many in the region, making any unusual military aircraft flyover activity over the capital especially attention-grabbing.
