The University of Montana is in the midst of an intensive search for its new president, a process that has attracted a significant number of candidates. Over 60 individuals have shown interest, as reported by a representative from the Office of the Commissioner of Higher Education.

“We do not have an exact count at this time, as several applications are still being completed and additional submissions are expected,” mentioned Galen Hollenbaugh, spokesperson and Deputy Commissioner, through an email dispatched earlier this week.

The vacancy arose when former UM President Seth Bodnar stepped down in January, expressing his intention to engage in other public service roles. On the final day for candidate filing, he announced his independent candidacy for the U.S. Senate, challenging the sitting Republican Senator Steve Daines.

To expedite the selection of a new president, Commissioner of Higher Education Clayton Christian has enlisted AGB Search, a firm experienced in managing executive appointments within the Montana University System. Christian has been sharing periodic updates about the search process on a dedicated website. According to his latest communication, the candidate pool is “strong and diverse.”

Christian has also formed a small working group to support the vetting process, comprised of members with varied perspectives. This group will aid in refining the selection of candidates considered exceptional. Hollenbaugh disclosed the working group’s composition, which includes:

  • Community member and former Regent Joyce Dombrouski
  • Faculty Senate Chairperson Valerie Moody
  • Staff Senate President Dominic Beccari
  • Administration Representative John DeBoer (Vice President of Academic Affairs)
  • ASUM (Associated Students of the University of Montana) President Buddy Wilson

While the specifics of the remaining stages in the selection process and the precise responsibilities of the working group remain undisclosed, Christian has projected that the appointment of a new president could occur within one to three months, potentially as soon as the start of this month.
