Two Michigan Women Eyeing Presidential Run in 2028
Michigan may have not one, but potentially two women vying for the presidency in the next election cycle. Governor Gretchen Whitmer recently hinted at the possibility of a White House bid, saying “never say never.” Now, Michigan U.S. Senator Elissa Slotkin has also expressed interest in a run for the presidency in 2028.
During an appearance before the Detroit Economic Club, Slotkin, a Democrat, emphasized the importance of this generation’s fight and her desire to be part of it. She highlighted the unique position of Michigan as a swing state, crucial for understanding how to appeal to a diverse range of voters across the country.
Slotkin believes that a political figure from a midwestern swing state, like Michigan, could resonate with voters more focused on practical solutions than rigid ideology. She described the people of Michigan as practical, hardworking individuals who prioritize getting things done over flashy rhetoric.
Since her election to the Senate, Slotkin has been actively building a national profile through media appearances and fundraising efforts in early primary states. Having previously held a competitive U.S. House seat, Slotkin’s political trajectory showcases her appeal to voters in a state that elected Republican Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential race.
With President Trump ineligible for reelection in 2028 due to the 22nd Amendment, Slotkin sees an opportunity for a candidate like herself to bring a pragmatic, problem-solving approach to the presidency. As she continues to engage with national audiences and shape her political platform, Slotkin’s potential candidacy could further elevate Michigan’s significance in future elections.
