Plans for Immigration Detention Center in Romulus Cancelled
After facing opposition from local residents and immigrant rights groups, plans for a federal immigration detention center in Romulus have been scrapped by the Department of Homeland Security. The proposed facility aimed to house up to 500 detainees at a warehouse in Romulus, Michigan, but strong resistance led to its cancellation.
The Romulus location was one of seven nationwide ICE facilities being considered for sale as part of the agency’s crackdown on undocumented individuals. Despite spending over $700 million on warehouses for detainment purposes, the decision to abandon the Romulus project signifies a significant shift in plans.
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel had filed a lawsuit back in March to block the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility, citing concerns about disrupting communities and violating zoning ordinances. Nessel expressed satisfaction with ICE’s decision to halt the project, emphasizing the importance of respecting state laws and community well-being.
Romulus Mayor Robert McCraight commended DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin for reconsidering the location, emphasizing that while responsible enforcement of laws is crucial, the proposed facility’s proximity to residential areas and schools made it unsuitable. The potential burden on public safety resources and environmental concerns were key factors in the opposition to the detention center.
Despite the victory in halting the Romulus detention center, State Representative Dylan Wegela highlighted that the fight against ICE’s actions is ongoing. He pointed out the need to continue challenging unlawful practices and ensuring accountability in immigration enforcement efforts.
As Michigan already houses federal detainees in four county jails and one large privately owned facility, the cancellation of the Romulus project marks a significant development in the state’s immigration landscape. The AG’s office will maintain the lawsuit until the property sale is finalized, confirming that DHS and ICE will not proceed with establishing a detention center in Romulus.
