Chandler School District Forms Safety Committee After Fatal Accident

Chandler Unified School District Forms Committee for Enhanced Student Safety

In response to a tragic incident involving a student from Chandler High School, the Chandler Unified School District has established a Safety and Security Advisory Committee. This new panel convened for the first time on April 21, and its inception followed the unfortunate death of Jayben Camacho, a student who was struck by a vehicle while crossing the street outside his school. The accident occurred just beyond a marked crosswalk, leading to his hospitalization and subsequent passing. As noted on his family’s GoFundMe page, Camacho’s decision to donate his organs has contributed to saving several lives.

During a recent meeting of the district’s governing board, Superintendent Frank Narducci provided insights into the committee’s objectives. “[They are] identifying existing challenges and recommending possible feasible solutions,” Narducci explained. He added that the initial meeting attracted significant participation, and the committee plans to reconvene the following week to evaluate potential solutions.

Currently, students at Chandler High School can leave campus during lunch periods, a policy under scrutiny since Camacho’s accident took place during lunchtime on April 2. A communication dispatched to families indicated that the committee will reconsider this practice along with other safety measures.
