Judge Finds Suspect in Actor James Handy’s Murder Incompetent for Trial

Actor James Handy’s Murder Case Delayed Due to Suspect’s Mental Incompetence

The tragic stabbing of actor James Handy, known for his roles in “Jumanji” and “Top Gun: Maverick,” has taken a new turn as the suspect, Michael Gledhill, has been deemed mentally incompetent to stand trial. A Los Angeles judge ruled on Monday that Gledhill cannot comprehend the charges or participate in his defense.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Maria Cavalluzzi determined that the 44-year-old Gledhill lacks the mental capacity to understand his legal situation. This decision came after Gledhill openly admitted to the police that he was involved, following the incident on June 3, where Handy was found stabbed outside his girlfriend’s home – Gledhill’s mother.

Gledhill, who has not yet entered a plea or appeared in court, was scheduled for arraignment on June 5. However, proceedings were paused to allow for a mental health evaluation. Following psychiatric assessments, a specialized court swiftly ruled him incompetent. Judge Cavalluzzi has further allowed involuntary medication for Gledhill, based on a psychiatrist’s suggestion that proper medication could significantly improve his mental health.

A hearing has been set for July 14 to discuss Gledhill’s long-term placement. The trial will proceed only if he regains competence. As of now, there has been no response from the legal representatives of either side regarding the situation.

Brian Delate, a fellow actor and close friend of Handy, shared insights with The Associated Press, noting that Gledhill lived in a garage fixed up by his mother. Delate mentioned that Handy, who frequently spent time there, had previously remarked on Gledhill’s mental health challenges.

James Handy, who graced both the big screen and television for decades, was widely recognized for his performances in various crime dramas including “NCIS: Los Angeles,” “The Closer,” and “Cold Case.” His sudden death marks a significant loss in the entertainment industry.
