Air Force Special Ops Fires Top Enlisted Leader Amid Investigation

Top Air Force Enlisted Leader Reassigned Amid Investigation

The Air Force Special Operations Command has undergone a significant leadership change with the dismissal of its top enlisted leader. This development comes as part of an ongoing investigation, although details remain sparse.

Chief Master Sgt. Anthony Green, who played a vital role in guiding the readiness and training of enlisted air commandos, was relieved of his duties this week. The decision, made by Air Force Special Operations Commander Lt. Gen. Mike Conley, was attributed to a “loss in confidence” in Green’s abilities.

Rebecca Heyse, a spokesperson for the command, confirmed to Military.com that Green is in the process of being reassigned outside the headquarters while the investigation continues. The particulars of the investigation have not been disclosed.

An internal email from Conley to the Air Force Special Operations Command, which surfaced online, assured personnel that the decision followed a careful review of the situation. Heyse has verified the email’s authenticity.

Conley emphasized, “As airmen, we are entrusted with the incredible responsibility and held to the highest standards of conduct. Upholding these standards is non-negotiable, and maintaining good order and discipline is fundamental to who we are.” He added that, while questions are expected, responses may be limited.

Green’s tenure in the Air Force began in 1995, during which he served in various capacities such as an instructor, maintenance technician on C-130 aircraft, and as a combat aviation adviser. His previous roles included senior enlisted leader of force structure at U.S. Special Operations Command and command chief master sergeant at the Air Force Expeditionary Center in New Jersey.

Green assumed the position of command chief of Air Force Special Operations Command in May 2023. A successor has not yet been announced.

This change in leadership is part of a broader trend within the Air Force. Recently, a Space Force commander in Greenland was relieved following a Military.com report about an email distancing the base from comments made by Vice President JD Vance. Additionally, the commander of the 557th Weather Wing at Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska was dismissed earlier this month following legal issues that have since been resolved.
