F-35 Fighter Jet Incident: Pilot Ejects Safely Before Crash in Nevada
In a dramatic turn of events, a military pilot successfully ejected from an F-35 fighter jet moments before it crashed north of Las Vegas. The pilot, whose identity remains undisclosed, is affiliated with Nellis Air Force Base and sustained only minor injuries in the incident.
A spokesperson from Nellis AFB confirmed to Military.com that the pilot was en route to the hospital for evaluation. “Last that we know he was on his way to the hospital to get checked out,” the spokesperson stated, adding that the crash investigation is ongoing. Fortunately, residential and populated areas were not impacted by the crash.
The crash site is located approximately 25 miles northeast of Indian Springs, Nevada, within controlled airspace over the Nevada Test & Training Range, a restricted federal area. Local television stations displayed images of emergency responders at the scene.
Concerns over the F-35 fleet’s reliability have been recurrent. A 2024 report by the U.S. Department of Defense’s director of operational test and evaluation revealed that F-35 jets were operationally available only 51% of the time, falling short of the 65% target. The report, which can be accessed online, noted that “the operational suitability of the F-35 fleet remains below service expectations and requirements.”
As of Tuesday afternoon, the cause of the crash remains undetermined. Updates will follow as more information is released.
