Chandler Takes a Stand Against Food and Drink Tampering with New Ordinance
The city of Chandler is taking significant steps to enhance the safety of its residents by introducing a new ordinance aimed at preventing food and drink tampering. The recently adopted measure by the Chandler City Council is designed to address gaps in existing state legislation, ensuring stricter regulations against such malicious activities.
Under this new ordinance, individuals caught using or attempting to use drugs or intoxicating substances in someone else’s food or drink could face a Class 1 misdemeanor charge. This move highlights the proactive approach Chandler is adopting to safeguard its community.
Councilmember OD Harris, who introduced the ordinance, emphasized its focus on attempts to tamper with food and drink, a crucial aspect that state laws currently overlook. “Well, this particular ordinance addresses attempt. That’s the key word in this. So if you attempt to do this, that’s the one thing that the state law does not have. It only talks about the execution of it,” Harris explained.
The ordinance not only criminalizes the act of tampering but also empowers victims to report incidents with the assurance that their concerns will be taken seriously by the authorities. Harris further underscored the importance of such measures as Chandler continues to develop educational institutions and attract more students to the area.
Chandler’s decision mirrors similar actions in neighboring East Valley cities. For instance, Tempe has already implemented an ordinance mandating that businesses maintain test kits to detect drink spiking.
The Chandler ordinance is set to come into effect on May 24, reinforcing the city’s commitment to preventing food and drink tampering and ensuring the safety of its residents.
