A Heroic Confrontation in Glenwood: Airman Intervenes in Deadly Shooting

In a gripping scene that unfolded in a quiet Iowa neighborhood, an airman intervened in a violent episode, potentially saving numerous lives. The bravery displayed by Harrison Friar, a senior airman, has captured national attention following a deadly shooting incident on August 6.

According to a U.S. Air Force release, Friar was at home in Glenwood with his family when the sound of gunfire, initially mistaken for fireworks, approached their residence. “It was so close that I felt there was something wrong, like really wrong,” his wife, Brielle Friar, recounted to KETV.

The shooter, identified as 71-year-old Dennis Burnell, was reportedly targeting homes indiscriminately when Friar stepped outside. The Iowa Department of Public Safety revealed that Burnell had already claimed the lives of two neighbors, Brandon and Stevie Oman, due to an “interpersonal dispute.”

As bullets struck Friar’s home, including his children’s bedroom walls, he took decisive action. “My first instinct was to keep my family safe, keep my neighbors safe, and keep my neighborhood safe,” Friar told KETV. He armed himself and confronted Burnell, demanding he cease fire.

Footage captured by KETV shows the tense exchange, with Friar standing his ground and ultimately firing two shots that injured Burnell, who retreated into his home. This intervention allowed precious time for police to arrive, potentially averting further casualties.

Authorities later disclosed that Burnell had amassed hundreds of rounds of ammunition, suggesting his intent to inflict more harm. He was eventually contained within his residence.

During the ensuing standoff, Burnell set his house ablaze before being captured by law enforcement. Severely burned, he succumbed to his injuries two days later.

Lt. Col. Rosemary Perez-Howell, Friar’s squadron commander, commended his actions, stating, “(Harrison) Friar demonstrated extraordinary mental fortitude and valor in a moment of unimaginable duress. He embodies the noblest traditions of military service: selfless action, courage under fire, and commitment to protecting others.”

Glenwood, located near the Iowa-Nebraska border, remains in shock from the incident, but the community has found a hero in Friar, whose quick thinking and bravery are credited with saving lives.
