A shooting incident at Holloman Air Force Base on Tuesday resulted in the death of a military veteran and left an active-duty airman injured. The base, located in Otero County, New Mexico, was briefly on lockdown but has since been deemed secure.
The altercation occurred around 5:30 p.m. on March 17, near the base Shoppette, and was described by officials as a “domestic-related” incident. The 49th Wing Public Affairs office confirmed the incident involved an active-duty service member and a civilian veteran, who were not married to each other.
Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene, and the injured airman was transported to a hospital. The airman remains in stable condition and is assigned to Holloman AFB.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the 49th Wing assured, “This was an isolated incident and there is no ongoing threat to our community.” Officials are withholding the names of those involved due to privacy concerns and pending notification of next of kin.
“We ask that individuals avoid speculating on social media regarding the incident out of respect for the families involved,” they added.
Holloman Air Force Base covers an area of approximately 93 square miles and has been operational since 1942, playing a key role in national security with its combat-ready airmen and guardians.
Despite the proximity to the base, Otero County Sheriff David Black stated that local authorities did not participate in the investigation and deferred inquiries to military officials.
Coincidentally, another shooting took place the same day at a Veterans Affairs clinic in Georgia, involving a Department of Veterans Affairs employee and a gunman who was subsequently shot by police.
The investigation into the Holloman AFB shooting is ongoing, with further details to be disclosed as they emerge.
