Arizona’s School Voucher Program Faces Proposed Changes Amid Rising Costs
In an effort to address the escalating costs associated with Arizona’s school voucher program, two education-focused groups have introduced a ballot initiative for significant reforms. The program, which has seen its expenses soar to nearly $1 billion annually since its inception in 2022, is under scrutiny for potentially unchecked spending.
The proposed measure aims to exclude families earning more than $150,000 annually from participating in the voucher program. Additionally, it seeks to enforce new accountability standards for private educational institutions, including testing protocols, background checks, and procedures for handling misconduct allegations.
Save Our Schools Arizona, led by Beth Lewis, is one of the organizations spearheading this initiative. Lewis expressed frustration with the current legislative inaction, stating, “Arizona lawmakers have refused now for three sessions in a row, you know, we’re in the fourth, where this program was universal. And they have just stubbornly refused to make any headway.”
Concerns have also been raised about misuse within the program. The Arizona Department of Education has been approving expenses up to $2,000 without stringent oversight, leading some families to exploit the system for purchases such as jewelry, vacations, and other luxury items.
